The Firewall Working Group is an ad hoc group of information technology professionals at the University of Waterloo reporting to UCIST, CSAG, CNAG and the Security Working Group who are working on ways to implement this recommendation of the Security Working Group accepted by UCIST in September of 2003 and discussed in subsequent Security Working Group reports to UCIST:

"We [ie. the Security Working] recommend that the firewall rules for our external gateway be more restrictive -- we support the blocking of all Microsoft networking services as per recent recommendations by Microsoft and the CERT. We also encourage more work to lock down services even better."

The working group is not a standing group like the Security Working Group -- instead we are a tasked project with a narrow focus. It is our intention to produce a report and make recommendations to UCIST at their meeting of January 21, 2005 so that soon thereafter we may have better firewall strategies to protect the campus network.
